An 8-year-old White Plains girl is preparing for the finals of the prestigious Youth America Grand Prix – the world’s largest student scholarship ballet competition.
Sophia Romagnoli is one of 300 young ballerinas invited to next week’s finals, selected from among more than 5,000 entrants from around the world. She’s been studying ballet for two years at Sscarsdale Ballet Studio, taking classes six days a week and receiving private coaching from Diane White, a former soloist with the New York City Ballet.
Sophia had to receive special permission to compete in the Grand Prix, which is normally open to dancers from 9 to 19 years old. Winners will receive scholarships to leading dance schools.
The competition is scheduled for April 12-19 at the Jack H. Skirbell Center for Performing Arts in Manhattan.
