The Federal Emergency Management Agency, at the request of New York state, has approved a 14-day extension of the Transitional Sheltering Assistance program in the state and a 30-day extension for the Individual Assistance program, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The extension allows eligible survivors of Superstorm Sandy last October to stay in participating hotels or motels until Feb. 9 (with a Feb. 10 checkout date) and enable eligible individuals to receive federal assistance to repair damaged properties. [1]

FEMA [2] will contact individuals who are eligible to continue staying in hotels and motels, Cuomo said. Individuals must be checked into the program by tomorrow in order to be eligible. The program is short term while individuals and families work toward a longer-term housing plan.

The extension of the Individual Assistance program [3]gives individuals and businesses another month to apply for assistance for home repairs and other needs and to the Small Business Association [4]for loans.

“We remain committed to assisting all victims of Hurricane Sandy, ensuring that they have the shelter they need, especially in this cold weather,” Cuomo said in a statement. “The Transitional Sheltering Assistance program [5]will continue to provide shelter to those New Yorkers who do not have homes to return and help others with critically needed funding to rebuild.”

People must apply to FEMA to be eligible for assistance. They can do so online [6]; register on smartphone or tablet using the FEMA app or going to m.fema.gov; or by calling 800-621-3362. The TTY number is 800-462-7585. For 711 or Video Relay Service, call 800-621-3362.
