Free reusable bags available

Free reusable shopping bags designed by a White Plains High School student will be available Saturday (Dec. 1) at stores which participated in a city initiative urging residents to stop using plastic and switch to the environmentally-friendly reusables.

Last fall, Mayor Tom Roach invited representatives of the city’s large retailers to meet and discuss the plastic bag issue. Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, Target, Wal-Mart and Whole Foods Market agreed to underwrite the cost of producing 20,000 reusable bags. In May, White Plains High School student Max Crawley’s design, featuring an orange White Plains logo circled by arrows representing recycling, was chosen as the winning logo in a contest held at the school.

On Saturday a total of 8,700 bags will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the sponsoring stores. The rest will be available sometime this spring.
