Edgemont to dedicate gym in honor of longtime instructor

For 44 years, Jim San Marco served Edgemont’s students as a physical education teacher, athletic director, coach and mentor.

His contributions to the community have inspired a small group of alumni to donate more than $200,000 to renovate and name a gymnasium in San Marco’s honor.

“I always urged students to ‘be the best you can be,’ and, based on their successes, they have done just that,” San Marco said. “Perhaps in some small way, I have helped them to become better people and contributors to society.”

The school district and Edgemont School Foundation (ESF), a non-profit charity, will dedicate the facility during a public ceremony at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 14.

Built in the 1950s, the gymnasium requires significant upgrades to ensure its continued longevity. ESF is expected to fund a grant to rebuild the Jim San Marco Gymnasium into a state-of-the-art teaching and learning center.

School officials say renovations will be completed next summer. John Griffin, an Edgemont alumus coached by San Marco, has pledged to match additional donations made up to $100,000.
