White Plains and Sleepy Hollow are offering a text messaging service that allows cellphone users to send anonymous crime tips to police.
The program is intended for residents who want to report information about any “non-urgent illegal activity,” including unsolved cases, vandalism or theft.
Law enforcement officials say it creates a safe way for people to do the right thing without disclosing their identity.
“A lot of people are reluctant to call because they don’t want to leave their name,” Sleepy Hollow Police Chief Greg Camp said. “Here, they can feel more comfortable to send an anonymous tip. This tip could assist in an investigation that can lead to an arrest.”
Residents with iPhone and Android Mobile devices can download TipSubmit Mobile, a free application that lets users have a two-way dialogue with police.
Those living in White Plains without Internet access on their cellphones can send tips by texting 274637 (CRIMES) with the keyword WPPD.
In Sleepy Hollow, users can text tips to police by typing SHPDTIPS in their message and sending it to 274637 (CRIMES).
Crime tips can also be submitted online at TipSoft.com.
