The Westchester County Board of Legislators recently approved $8.18 million to finance the replacement of two bridges that carry the Bronx River Parkway over the Bronx River and the MTA Metro-North Railroad Line at Crane Road in the Village of Scarsdale and in the Town of Greenburgh.
ADDED: Also, on April 26, the board accepted appraisals showing that nine parcels of land that must be acquired as part of the project are worth just under $1 million. The county will now make offers to the village of Scarsdale and Midtown Trackage Ventures, which own the properties. (END ADD)
According to a news release from Legislator Bill Ryan, D-White Plains, the two bridges, built in 1924, “have widespread advanced deterioration” and must be replaced. ”The bridge carrying the Parkway over the river is 315 feet long. The Parkway Bridge over the railroad tracks is 76 feet long. The estimated total cost of the bridge replacement project is $62.98 million. Funding from federal and state surface transportation programs will amount to $51.38 million. The County’s share of the project cost is $11.6 million. The County bonded $3.42 million of its share in 2009. The remaining $8.18 million was approved Monday, April 11.
Ryan said the existing bridges will remain open to traffic while a new bridge is constructed south and east of the current spans; the old bridges will then be demolished. The project schedule calls for a construction start date of March 1, 2012 and completion date of October 31, 2014.
