For the first of what I’m sure will be many, many Hudson Valley Restaurant Week meals on Small Bites over the next two weeks, my colleague Karen Croke and I headed to Emma’s Ale House, not too far from the Journal News headquarters in White Plains. My favorite dish was the chicken lollipops:
They are wings, really, with part of the bones chopped off. They are really tasty — moist on the inside, crispy on the outside. But the top of the charred bone crumbled in my fingers, and that was a little annoying. Kind of gross to have bone chips falling onto your plate. But — I pushed them aside and enjoyed the “lollipops” anyway!
I’ve been to Emma’s a few times before — a few lunches, and a few times for after-work drinks. It’s the perfect sort of pub for either. Comfortable, grown up, with good food and an easy-going staff.
This time we sat in the back dining room. Photos, after the jump.
The back dining room:
My friend Karen’s “Farmers Market Salad”:
Fantastic! Mixed greens with dried cranberries, cucumbers and a light vinaigrette.
For our mains, we each got burgers. Karen got the “topless’ burger — sans bun:
And I got the turkey burger with cranberry chutney:
Cranberry chutney. Sweet, but very nice.
Both burgers were tasty. Mine was a little dry. Karen’s was super juicy. I guess that’s the difference between turkey and beef, huh?
Our desserts were delishy. Lemon sorbet:
And “Krispy Kreme” bread pudding with caramel sauce:
YUM. I know everyone does a bread pudding during HVRW, because it’s so inexpensive. So that can get tiresome. But this is a great version, and I’d highly recommend it for any time.
The HVRW lunch menu at Emma’s has a lot of choices — not just the required three. So that’s a great thing, though they are mostly salads for apps and burgers or sandwiches for entrees. Still, it was easy to find something appealing — and the food was quite good and tasty. Emma’s, as my first HVRW lunch? You did me proud.
